Very pleased , seems expensive - but is value for money
I had to upgrade my Clie to a UX-50 as a result of an accident to my existing NR-70V and all other Clies had been withdrawn and I concerned about reviews that Id read about this model (battery life etc) Well , after three weeks of getting used to the UX-50 I have to say that I think this Clie is fantastic and well worth having
True battery life is shorter than my first Palm Pilot ( a month), but then I could not take photographs, record video, transfer data between the Clie and my mobile Z600, play music, games like Monopoly and Agression , and do the usual things like Diary and Addresses.
The user interface is excellent - better than NR70-V one which I had replaced with Facer - but I wont do that for the UX-50
The battery indicator is on the main screen , there is a pop-up clock , memory card indicator and sound control.
The camera is a step up from the NR-70V with the ability to zoom on the image in the viwer
There is a file viewer included with the Clie but I use Documents to Go and that works well on this model of Clie
The Voice Recorder is fine - good for reminders
The USB port is a bit fiddly when syncing up to the desktop but the flat power cradle is much better than the desk stand ones in previous Clies
And the best bit is that my existing Presenter to Go works with the UX-50 - and for work presentations the Clie is as good as my laptop - and about a tenth of the weight
All in all this is an excellent piece of kit - and I use it for both work and private use
If you need this level of functionality I can recommend this Clie - but do as I have and get the in car charger

Lets face it...it looks superb
OK so it has wifi b as opposed to g. You load tube maps pro and docs to go and it struggles unless you add memory. But SO WHAT. This is the best looking PDA on the market. It will replace your laptop for most applications. The screen has a superb resolution. Overall this is a beautiful toy for grown ups who deserve it! Sony doesnt include a case which for the price is rather harsh but there again why should they you will want to buy one to protect it anyway! The packaging does not match the jewel like boxes the likes of Apple create (yes I know the clie does have an mp3 player and its very good but why would you want to use it when you can get yourself an ipod - nevermind convergence this is a gadgets lover world). OK I am struggling for criticisms. It does all the things any normal person will ever need and you will love it. Upgrade the old palm V you know it makes sense.

An incredible package
The UX-50 is a fantastically compact product. The design provides an outstanding screen and combines it with a keyboard that works well on the move - perhaps not as well as a Psion MX or even Revo. However it is more than usable considering the size and compact nature of the unit.

Battery life is really not that bad. It has stretched to a week between charges with careful use. To be honest it could be better, but again the unit is so compact you cant help but forgive it.

The typical pda functions are superb and it cannot be faulted in these respects. Where Sony have really excelled is the integration of wi-fi. The supplied NetFront browser is excellent and browsing over a wi-fi network is a pleasure considering the screen size. In terms of convenience, it compares favourably with a laptop - bear in mind that you cant just switch a wi-fi laptop on and start browsing, you have to wait for it to boot up. When you have finished you can fold the UX-50 up and put it in your pocket in seconds. This level of convenience is hard to beat at present.

Multimedia is well supported. Sound is good and with a decent Memory Stick the unit is a respectable MP3 player (MP3 only, no WMA). The sound recorder is also high quality. The camera is disappointing though. The functionality is excellent, but the quality and resolution of images is poor. These issues matter much less with regards the video facility, and as a result I have yet to be disappointed with the video captures.

The software included is fairly generous, and of high quality for the key functions like MP3, viewing images and email. But Sony no longer offer Documents To Go as part of the package. Instead, they include the very glossy Picsel Viewer. This software has a great interface, but files cannot be edited on the move and is of limited practical use to me at least.

As a package, the UX-50 works very well indeed. There are compromises, but the overall usabilty of the key functions is outstanding. The price is high, but remember that in many ways this Clie could replace a laptop - and it fits in a shirt pocket. If Sony improved battery life and included Docs To Go I would have considered 4.5 stars. If they added a 2mp camera aswell it would have been five.
